Family owned -Gold Hill was started by Hank Battjes in the early 80’s. He first started making wine in the early 70’s in the basement of his home in Palo Alto. His Wife gave him a home wine making kit and the passion was ignited. We still have a bottle of his first “vintage”. He was a natural chemist and entrepreneur. He tinkered with wine making in the basement and we stomped grapes in the back yard in trash bins, yes that is how wine is made. It was always an incredibly fun time. What we really remember in our hearts is that he loved it. There was something about it that fed his soul. He had a big head which was always firing on all cylinders. A friend of his from the Bay area mentioned a property in the Gold Hill area that he should come look at. He did, and the deal was sealed. This was the early 80’s when there were only a handful of wineries in El Dorado County. He bought the land seeing potential and tax benefits from being a farmer.

There's GOLD in those hills! Gold Hill Vineyard boasts one of the most sensational and picturesque winery settings in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Majestic views overlook the hills of Coloma and the American River Valley. Where world renown whitewater rafting is popular. Wedding parties, corporate events and fund raisers have been held in this fabulous setting, making use of Gold Hill’s 2,500-square-foot tasting room the lower pond area or at various scenic locations throughout the property.
The Property was all oak trees and rocks when he purchased it. He and his daughters came up from the Bay Area on weekends to work. He talked to fellow winemakers and vineyard owners at a time when it was a very collaborative county. His daughters helped plant vines, lay irrigation pipe, and work the fields to grow to the 50 acres planted today. They learned to drive a tractor before a car! Here, at an elevation of 1,500 feet, were planted Cabernet Sauvignon, Johannesburg Riesling, Chenin Blanc and Semillon. Muscat and Ruby Cabernet experiments were also undertaken. The fine wines produced by Gold Hill Today evidence the immense success of these experiments. The emphasis at Gold Hill is on producing the highest quality grapes possible in the foothills.
Award Winning Wines: Since 1989 Gold Hill has won multiple gold and double gold medals. More specially was the California State Fair Double Gold and Best wine of the Sierra Foothills in 1992 ’90 Merlot receiving a Silver and a Gold at the Cal state fair and a double gold at New Worlds International Wine Tasting. ’92 Cab Franc won a Gold at Riverside and so on… Gold Hill received Double Gold medals at the Amador Fair for both /97 Chardonnay & ’96 Merlot, best of class at the Cal State Fair for ’96 Can Franc, and Silver for Johannesburg Riesling. Plantings begun anew in 1998 with Syrah and Barbera, and a hot Hillside site destined for Zinfandel. The 1998 Reserve El Dorado Chardonnay was one of the first “unfiltered Chardonnay” to come out of the foothills- The wines character may have more to do with the finely manicured vineyard sweeping down the slope just below the winery.
Ponds and natural Rock-Out cropping's are just the beginning of this spectacular setting. Three ponds on the property with abundant grass picnic areas
The hillside vineyards are variable, being deep and well drained in granitic soils for Chardonnay and Cabernet grapes, yet in harsh, rocky soils for Merlot. Cool air flows down through the steep terraces to keep the grapes crisp and sweet. Additional acreage was planted in 1981 to emphasize Chardonnay, on the north-facing slopes, and Cabernet Sauvignon looking south.

Unlike most real estate websites, we allow our prospective clients to view as many maps, properties, and other details as they want. We REQUIRE registration only when you have been reviewing enhanced photos. Providing a top-notch search experience is our number one goal, but the real point of creating any real estate website is, as you might have guessed, to get you connected to a real estate expert. Not just to earn your business but because technology only takes us so far in communicating accurate information. If you are NOT looking for a property within the next year, just say so in the "notes" section of our registration form, and we promise that no one will contact you. Nor do we sell or distribute your information in any way.
